Centennial Beach in the Off-Season: The Quarry Goes Quiet (Naperville Riverwalk News)

There is no stranger transformation in Naperville than the one at 500 W. Jackson Avenue each fall. Centennial Beach — the Naperville Park District's beloved swimming quarry, packed from Memorial Day through Labor Day — sits still and silent in November, its spring-fed water dark under a gray sky, the sand empty, the diving platforms bare.

The beach began as a working quarry on the DuPage River, one of the stone quarries that supplied early Naperville's building boom. The double quarry was reborn as a public swimming beach, and generations of Naperville children have since learned to swim in the same water where stone was once cut — a piece of industrial ground converted, like the Riverwalk beside it, into the city's commons.

In season, the place is a small city of its own: swim lanes and slides, diving boards, sand play areas and crowds drawn from across the western suburbs. The Park District operates it on the classic northern schedule, open on weekends in the shoulder season and daily through the summer, then closed after Labor Day.

The off-season has its own public. The Riverwalk passes the beach, and walkers on the path get the quarry to themselves — glassy water, migrating birds, and the odd heron working the edges. The stillness is a reminder that the beach's quiet months are also its working months, when Park District crews handle the maintenance that a summer of thousands of swimmers makes necessary.

It will fill again. Every Naperville family knows the rhythm: the first hot weekend of late spring, the gates open, and the quarry resumes its second century of summers. Until then, Centennial Beach in November is the city's most peaceful room — outdoors, unheated and entirely worth the walk.
